{"id":811,"date":"2017-09-18T17:16:47","date_gmt":"2017-09-19T01:16:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/?p=811"},"modified":"2020-09-30T18:54:46","modified_gmt":"2020-10-01T02:54:46","slug":"sourdough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/2017\/09\/18\/sourdough\/","title":{"rendered":"Sourdough"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I obtained my sourdough starter from a neighbor who started it when she lived in Bethel, Alaska in October of 1984.\u00a0 It has been a wonderful addition to my baking.\u00a0 It makes great bread, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/2017\/09\/19\/sourdough-waffles\/\">waffles<\/a> and pizza dough.<\/p>\n<p>It is pretty easy to care for.\u00a0 I keep a couple of plastic containers of sourdough in my refrigerator.\u00a0 Each container holds about a cup.\u00a0 I use the starter two or three times a month.<\/p>\n<p>The night before each use, I feed the sourdough: I take one of the containers of sourdough out of the fridge and put it into a large glass bowl.\u00a0 You can use plastic or glass, but do not use a metal bowl.\u00a0 I add a cup or two of warm water and an equal amount (by weight) of flour to the bowl and stir it into a smooth batter.\u00a0 Then I cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it sit in a warm place overnight.\u00a0 If you are feeding the sourdough in the morning, allow 7 to 10 hours if you can.\u00a0 My neighbor will sometimes put the bowl in an oven with the light on to keep it warm during our long, cold Alaska nights.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been able to go as much as a month between feedings.\u00a0 A clear layer of liquid will likely form on the top of the starter, but this is nothing to worry about.<\/p>\n<p>There have been a couple of times when I left it in the fridge too long.\u00a0 I fund the repeated feedings over two or three days bring it back to life.<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0 you use the fed starter, be sure to set aside a cup or so and save it in your small plastic container in the fridge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sourdough has been a wonderful addition to my baking.\u00a0 It makes great bread, waffles and pizza dough.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":809,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"wprm-recipe-roundup-name":"","wprm-recipe-roundup-description":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":true,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[1],"tags":[405],"class_list":["post-811","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-sourdough"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/sourdoughcontainers.jpg","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"jetpack_shortlink":"https:\/\/wp.me\/p84U30-d5","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/811","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=811"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/811\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1977,"href":"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/811\/revisions\/1977"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/809"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=811"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=811"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.kaylasdoghouse.com\/kitchen\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=811"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
